The $1000 PS Audio NuWave DAC is excellent. I have one and prefer it over a few other DACs I've had in my system.
You can buy new PS Audio NuWave DACs right at your budget and there are used ones up on Audiogon for less. Search Audiogon for "NuWave".

I had a NuWave that was a lemon.... Channels kept going out.... Since upgrading the Schiit Bifrost to the Uber version, I now prefer the Schiit.....
I would hope so! I wouldn't stand for a DAC with an intermittent channel. ;-)
Your set up looks nice.
I actually found a Nuwave which I can have on trial for 2 weeks,
that seems to be the ideal situation

A DAC you should really consider is the iFI Micro DSD DAC & iUSB PS! Both can be had for $700. w\With Jriver, you can do DSD upsample on the fly. If you haven't heard DSD 64 or higher, your in for a big surprise.
I think it's an excellent DAC for the price. I prefer it over these DACs I once had in my system:
Wyred4Sound DAC2
Wavelength Brick v3
Luxman DA-06
Lynx Hilo
Apogee Mini DAC
The Wavelength and Luxman are more on the warm / soft side IMHO. I prefer a more neutral, detailed, and transparent sound from the DAC followed by some tube magic in the amplification. ;-)
Good luck!
Abe......What don't you like about the Wyred Dac2? I have the dac1 and was thinking about upgrading to the dac 2 dsd. What do you like better about the PS Audio?

I thought the W4S DAC2 was excellent. It was very comparable to the PS Audio NuWave DAC but the NuWave sounded ever so slightly more transparent and resolving.... but just barely. The DAC2 was a little more robust sounding in the mids and lower but again.... just barely.
Of course the DAC2 is much more versatile with it's remote control input switching and volume control where the NuWave is very basic.
The one thing that bugged me about the W4S DAC2 that I could never get around, and this may not matter to you, is that the audio through it was out of sync with video when I used the DAC for concert videos, music videos, and movies. The other DACs that I had were always perfectly in sync including the PS Audio NuWave.
I don't know if the newer DACs from W4S have this issue..... which is only an issue if you plan to use it with audio as well as video as I did.
If you don't have a PS Audio local dealer call Underwood Hi Fi and ask Wally what he suggests in that price range.
I bought a NWD from him and like it quite a bit.

Hi Abe
What is the brand/model of your ipad stand in the picture? I love it. I have been a member here for years but don't visit often as of late, forgot my password and just started over again.
Thanks
George
George,The stand is the Elago P2 Stand. I bought mine off Amazon and I see that they now have them in different colors including black and champagne gold. It's a bit pricey in my opinion for what is essentially bent aluminum but it does a good job and looks pretty nice.

+1 for the PS Audio Nuwave recommendation.
Abe; Do you use the stock Nuwave power cord or a aftermarket model?
I ask because the PS Audio literature clearly states that the performance can be significantly improved with a "better" power cord as well as some type of footers/isolation.
I am currently using the stock cord, but if it's possible to improve the already great sounding Nuwave, then I'm all for it.

The short answer is, I don't know.
I ran a better power cord on the NuWave DAC in my previous listening room but I did not compare it to the stock cord. I just plugged the Acoustic Zen Tsunami into the DAC.
I am presently running the stock black power cord but the setup is entirely different in a different room with different electronics. My other power cords are packed away somewhere down in the basement since we moved this summer.
A better power cord might help but it's not like the stock cord is making the DAC sound bad.
On a practical note, if I were planning to buy a power cord for the DAC, I wouldn't spend a lot on it, and certainly no where near the cost of the DAC itself. It wouldn't make sense (to me anyway) to spend $1000 on a power cord for a $1000 DAC.
I just happen to own the Tsunami power cord that I bought used several years ago, but it's not in use at the moment.
