while the rest of us marched by. Then, years later you check on things and are pissed to find that things got a lot better.
Sorry, doesn't make a lot of sense to me. You should be glad you found out.
And yes, generally even the cheapie DACs now greatly outperform the older ones.
If you'd put some money into it, you would find things are radically better than you think even now.
The greatest impediment to advancing an audiophile system is the audiophile.

I understand your reaction but in "absolute" terms my CD player always sounded "right" to my ears; it's not like I've been driving an old rotten car trying to ignore that all the cars around me were so much faster. Maybe I also expected a sophisticated 8 chips in differential mode arrangement to be still able to compete against a basic, one "modern" chip arrangement on a 3,5 x 5 inches circuit board... but it looks like I was wrong. I also feel the limiting factor in my CD player internal DAC might be the output stage's opamp, and not the DAC itself.
and you would be wise to do so likewise ;-)
Anyway, DACs in particular seem to have benefitted greatly from better development. Even the op-amps today are superior. I think that the competition is very intense for DACs and you would, therefore, get good bang for the buck.
I always look at the power supply, and I suspect that newer DACs are less sensitive to PS noise than older DACs, too. Anyway, the best combination to me seems like an older player -- when they were built like tanks -- and a newer DAC. Just my opinion though.
