I have a PS Audio Nuwave DAC as well.
I normally have it hooked up to a Sony sacd/cd player via digital wire and it goes into stand by after about 3 seconds of not receiving a signal.
I hooked a laptop (pc) up via usb - Same, no issues.
I am curious because I plan to buy a Mac Mini soon for a dedicated music server.
Maybe Abe will chime in. He has a Nuwave as well and I believe he uses a Mac.

OK, I talked with a PS Audio technician. He hooked a Nuwave DAC to a PC and it went to standby as would be expected when shut down. He then attached it to a Mac mini and it stayed locked, USB, and native as if the mini were still on after shut down the same as I'm experiencing.
It seems as if they were unaware of this interaction and have no solution. Something to do with the USB unit they are using. The standby state of the NuWave powers down input circuit and mutes the DAC but the power draw is only maybe 1 watt less.
I wouldn't have an answer to your question and wasn't even aware of a standby mode for the NuWave. I leave my Mac Mini and the NuWave powered ON 24/7 unless I have a reason to shutdown or reboot.
I've contacted PS Audio support via email but haven't heard back, to be fair it hasn't been long. I may call and when I get an answer I'll post back.
When it was initially connected to the mini I'm almost certain it went to standby as normal.
