Hi David,
Yes, some DAC chips used in NOS configuration can only handle redbook resolution. Many DACs that use these chips can receive higher resolution data and will drop the resolution so it is compatible with the DAC chip. Interestingly, some people prefer the sonics of these DACs to a delta sigma DAC processing the data at a higher resolution.
The DAC I have on order - which should hopefully ship in the next week or so - can do it both ways. I'm curious.

You have probably worked it out by now... DP-777SE. Should last me a decade or so.

...I'm thinking the 777 will clobber it. I really like the dual DAC idea but I'd have to sell off a kid or two to get one new.
