...true filterless DACs use only 16/44.1 DAC chips or can you have a hi-rez DAC chip and be a filterless NOS DAC? Sorry if my questions are ignorant but my understanding on this issue is very limited thus the questions.

Are you looking specifically for a DAC with no reconstruction filter, or only an analog reconstruction filter?
My Teredak Chamelion is a true nos dac. It has 16 parallel Phillips 1643 16 bit R2R ladder chips. Via USB it will accept up to 24/96 but will truncate the 24 bits to 16. A wonderful smooth analog sounding dac for only $500

TeraDak's web site says NOS but also says it uses ASRC. Wonder how that works.
The ASRC is to reduce jitter on the USB input board. Some people have removed this board from there dacs
