The Cal Audio has a Burr Brown Delta/sigma dac that upsampled all input signals to create an analog output. The Metrum Hex mentioned below is a true NOS dac with no filters. They will not disclose what chips they are using. Just to clarify many of today's DACs, even some calling themselves NOS DACs, employ delta-sigma DAC chips that, among other things, oversample, interpolate, convert the PCM signal to a PDM signal (pulse-density modulation), and filter our precious musical data. Filterless NOS DACs skip these steps and some feel that the resulting analog signal sounds more analog-like as a result.

...true filterless DACs use only 16/44.1 DAC chips or can you have a hi-rez DAC chip and be a filterless NOS DAC? Sorry if my questions are ignorant but my understanding on this issue is very limited thus the questions.

Are you looking specifically for a DAC with no reconstruction filter, or only an analog reconstruction filter?
My Teredak Chamelion is a true nos dac. It has 16 parallel Phillips 1643 16 bit R2R ladder chips. Via USB it will accept up to 24/96 but will truncate the 24 bits to 16. A wonderful smooth analog sounding dac for only $500

TeraDak's web site says NOS but also says it uses ASRC. Wonder how that works.
The ASRC is to reduce jitter on the USB input board. Some people have removed this board from there dacs
