It's so obviously better, it sounds worse.
Anyway I don't need a 16/44.1 DAC, got a Sony XA7 as Transport into Mac C 2500 Preamp, and a VSE/Sony 5400, which is really excellent at CD, when I actually want to hear a CD.
Hirez PCM and DSD Downloads sound amazing.
No way I'm going to bother with 16 bit downloads or Streaming.
If I want Background Music, I'll use the Tuner.
As a lifelong Professional Musician and Amatuer Recordist, I can tell you that 16/44.1
just doesn't cut it!
How anyone couldn't hear that, I just don't understand.
There was a Quote in Stereophile or Ab Snd that this guy
" Doesn't Believe " HiRez is better than 44.1 PCM, on a Technical Level.
He hasn't actually checked it out for himself, he lets his "Belief " rule his thinking and listening.
You too?

Higher resolution audio is the way forward. It's amazing to me how many excuses are made for 16/44. Unfortunately, it's all we have had for a long time.
How many dacs, cd players, amps, speakers, etc. have we gone through, to make digital a satisfying experience? 16/44 is 16/44 is 16/44 no matter how expensive the dac. Seems to me that the audio neurosis most of us are part of really started with CD's. Most of us do not even have any practical understanding of how digital even works. Most of the tweaks for CD sound production are born of a misunderstanding of the medium.
I remember when I heard CD for the first time and it was not impressive. The first CD players in the college dorm or hearing a CD walkman for the first time and I knew something just did not sound right.
Hi fidelity is about resolution.
Anyway, I could go on, but once we are liberated from 16/44 and move on to a higher resolution format, the neurosis will subside. In the meantime, I'm not wasting any more time or money trying to make a silk purse from a sow's ear. I have my lp's to listen to.
As a lifelong Amateur Musician and Professional Recordist, I can tell you that 16/44.1 with the proper equipment can sound outstanding. If you like Hi-Rez that's fine but I have compared Hi Rez files up to DSD with the Mytek dac vs 16/44 with an AudioNote Transport and AudioNote dac and I and most of my audiophile friends prefer the 16/44 CD's. I even like the Teredak Chamelion even better.

"...AudioNote dac..." Alan
I think this is a good suggestion.

For years, I knew that in theory, high resolution would be superior. Until I heard it and was not too enthralled with the sound. And then I got an NOS/R2R DAC and found great musical enjoyment from CDs. I even prefer CDs over DVD-A (Gaucho), contrary to what I would have predicted from theory.
Not really the point...
It is so recording dependent it is hard to compare
It is very much recording quality dependent more so than format. As Ahendler noted 16/44 CD can sound superb! Some Hi Rez sounds excellent as well, but there's much unfulfilled hype and disappointing sound also.
