The DAC should sound very nice given the design. The $1550 price seemed like a huge bargain until I read that's with the wall-wart PS. I am currently in the throes of comparing a bunch of wall-wart/brick PS, linear PS, and battery PS's, and the sonic difference is stupendous. This DAC, unfortuantely, should really be looked at as a $2100-$2500 DAC when fitted with a proper PS..
I was a bit confused by your text. When you say "linear PS", does that mean commercially available stand-alone power supplies for SS amps?
Might i ask what electrical "specs" such a power supply should have to be compatible with the DAC?

According to the forum threads, its power requirement will be 6-9 VDC ~400 mA, which is not very hard to provide, even with small batteries.
A super-duper linear PS may sound as good/better, but the cost will be high. I personally prefer batteries when digital/USB is involved, and a simple DIY battery PS can be rigged up by putting two 3.7V rechargeable Li-ion batteries in series (7.4V) or by putting a bunch of 9V Li-ion rechargeables in parallel (will last longer).
I currently have such battery setup powering a USB card, which sounds an order of magnitude better than without.
If one wanted a commercial battery supply, there are several places one could look, albeit at much higher prices.
Do DACS all sound the same?

Well, it's settled then!

Thank you for the link.

read also the thread Do all DACs sound more or less the same? found on computer audiophile. good thing about the Bottlehead DAC is that it is upgradeable. Alex Crespi said that the Bottlehead DAC can be powered by the $925 UpTone JS-2 linear power supply.
Is the thread, "Do all DACs sound more or less the same," you referenced on the CA site an exact thread title. I am experiencing difficulty locating the thread.
Please, help.

Not being mean but any DAC with a simple wall wart like the Bottlehead can be upgraded. I read Bottlehead has plans for a battery PS upgrade. I assembled a nice linear PS for my Squeezebox and it really helped over the supplied wall wart.

This is maybe the closest thing I've ever read in regard to how I'd personally design a DAC.
Take a look at what the designer, John Swenson, has to say about the oversampling reconstruction filter in this DAC. See the URL.
Thoughts?

But having known the people working on it for over a decade, and knowing their audio preferences, my guess is that it will be quite a good sounding DAC.
Thanks for posting this. I may have missed it in the long description..is a tube DAC?
I am very interested.
That's pretty scary, huh?
Even scarier if it is an outboard box costing $1500! LOL!
Originally, it was assumed that the BH DAC would have a tube output stage. Bottlehead even built a couple of early prototypes with tubes. After trying a different DAC chip, it was decided the tube output stage was no longer needed. To quote one of the people involved (emphasis mine):
"I can say that there was a distinct disadvantage in the case of this DAC when adding any of the tube output stages we tried."
Coincidentally, along with the very exciting Bottlehead DAC, the Schiit Statement DAC is also getting closer to reality. Named Yggdrasil or Yggy for short. I'm betting both of these will be top-class DACs!

I have no doubt the BH will be very, very good. The quality of the people involved, and the surprising decision to do away with tubes speaks volumes about the integrity of the design.
