Hi, i see that many blue ray players can play wav files from a usb stick
I know of the sound quality of the Oppo digital but what about cheaper models ?
What about the Sony of the ES series ? they look seriously well built
Anyone has experience of a very good sounding BR unit ?
Thanks
Kind regards,
bg

Via HDMI I much prefer sound & picture from the Sony 1000ES to the Oppo 103, IMO picture on the Oppo is bright unnatural & fatiguing to watch as for the sound the HF just does not compare well with the Sony, plus Oppos are a rip-off price especially in the UK.
Hi and thanks for the valuable advice
Are you referring to the Sony ES BDP-S1000ES ?
It is an interesting piece indeed
I would like to use it as a player also for wav files from USB stick
What do you think ?
Thanks again
Kind regards,
bg
Yes Sony BDP-1000ES or UK model BDP-760. I am not into streaming or downloading audio and never will be. I
like collecting discs CDs, SACDs & BDs

Hi and thanks a lot
I will search for that player for sure
Thanks again

Disbeliever claims it's naive to trust any review and not listen for yourself. But listening for yourself can be impractical for those of us who do not live near or wish to travel to a big city. Nor is it practical for those of us who like to buy used equipment. Furthermore, listening, except when the component is in your own setup, can be quite misleading.

Therefore you are one of the unfortunates. Sometimes the reviews are correct. but can not totally be relied upon. So you have to chance it you may be lucky.

Funny, I don't feel unfortunate when I listen to my Ayre C-5xeMP sending its analog output through my Parasound JC-2 preamp to Proceed HPA amps that drive KEF Reference 107/2 speakers, nor when I listen to my Thorens TD 124 with Ortofon SME 30H cartridge through that same system. All those components were bought used without audition.

Hi again
so it seems that the stereo analog outs in the BR players are not so optimized for sound quality
I asked this because i listened very briefly to a sony bdp s1700es and the impression with a cd was quite good
But i understand now that i should have listened more carefully
And also i liked the option for playing wav from a usb stick, quite handy
Thanks again

that has volume control. Theoretically, you could use is as a stand alone source to amp since it decodes most everything.
Hi and sorry for the late reply
So i assume that the volume control is not affecting the sound quality ?
At this stage i am also interested in Sony ES series players
I am just looking for a musical sound ... not surely high end.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,

Not theoretically, actually a lot of folks connect an Oppo 105 directly to amps with good result. Analog stereo from my 105 goes to a Parasound JC-2 BP, surround directly to amps, sub to LF acoustic room correction. The JC-2 is used to accommodate an Ayre C-5xeMP, Sony XA5400ES, and JC-3 phono stage in addition to the Oppo.

denon, marantz, panasonic & sony have all made bdp's that also play music quite well.
Hi and this is my feeling
The new generation of blue ray players can give a decent sound
I cannot expect a high end result
In general i find in the bass the biggest difference for digital source
The average sources have light bass ... non powerful enough
Thanks a lot

?
Hi something that for instance has received good reviews from specialized magazines
It is no secret that the Oppo are fine sounding machine with well designed and built audio analog sections
If you search in the inmates systems you will find many people using them as main digital sound sources in great systems
This for me is more than enough
Kind regards,

That isn't good enough for me.
I trust some magazines quite a lot
For instance Stereophile ... if they say that something is good it is really good
But i have no golden ears of course
In the sense that i am not very picky ... just musical sound for me is enough
Kind regards,

You must be very naive to trust any magazine, you always have to listen yourself.
Hi and well ... i did not mean any but the most popular
Abosolute Sound, Stereophile ... and some internet sites
i am always looking for some giant killers ... especially for digital sources
Digital is a strange beast ... when old units sound better than more recent ones this surprises me a lot indeed

I suspect there are several grades of Oppo in the case of the 103 which I happen to own. Stock, modded and super modded. There are a great many things that can be done to these players and it all depends on where you want to get off. I am referring to two channel Redbook here, not video.
Hi and thanks
i am afraid that these mods increase the total price of the unit a lot
I saw 1000 USD for mods ... with an initial cost of 600 USD for one 103
I was rather thinking to a 2nd hand TOTL Pioneer or Sony ES blue ray player quite common on the market now
I am just looking for a nice and musical sound without any digital "strangenesses"
Clearly i cannot expect a great sound
Thanks again
Kind regards,

I seriously doubt you will be able get great sound, depending on your definition of great sound, of course, with ANY stock player. You have to get your hands dirty, I'm afraid.
Only the two 105 models. I have the 103, and while it's a great BD player, it's only mediocre to music.

Hi and thanks a lot for the helpful advice
I think that the transport+dac solution could be a good option in the end
I will start reading more about this
Kind regards,

I have a 11 year old Sony ES 555 dvd player that sounds great when using the digital out to my PS Audio NuWave dac. When I play a sacd I use the second pair of outs to the preamp, as the dac will not recognize sacd.
I was a vegetarian for 15 minutes, until the main course.......Meat; It's the right thing to do. Romans 14:2
I've had DVD players and a Blue Ray, all said to have above average sound quality. They all do, but it invariably is far below what we find acceptable. However, if you use the digital out to a good DAC unit, I don't see the problem. I haven't found it easy to navigate the menus and find it far easier to pluck in a CD when I want background music.
