Big Wham! and George Michael fan here. The group was very short-lived, but made its mark in the industry and fans in doing so. By the time GM was ready for a solo gig, I do not think that Andrew was on board for those musical styles. Besides, AR was heavy into motorsports and wanted to pursue those roads (no pun).
Thanks! for sharing.
Follow Ups:
In September ’85, I had just started at Lowell High School. Toting a Walkman, I was walking from the gym, onto a muddy slope, on my way to the outdoor basketball courts. I had heard Howard Jones’ “New Song” and Scritti Politti’s “Perfect Way,” when my classmate from homeroom, Lillian, walks by. And then she slips on the muddy surface. I take off my Walkman, and help her up. Luckily, only her knee (she had fallen forward, used her hands to brace herself) got dirty.
So I make my way to the basketball courts, sit on the side, and wait for my friends. I pull out my Walkman, scan the airwaves, and on comes Wham’s absolutely killer “I’m Your Man.”
A couple weeks later, back at these same basketball courts, one of my friends brings a boombox. We usually play cassettes, but this time, we leave the FM radio on. And that was the first time I heard Arcadia’s “Election Day.” A short while later, on comes “I’m Your Man.” And my friends go crazy! Even the girl bangs her hip, and belts out, “Dontchu know that, bay-bay, I’m your man?!” It doesn’t get any better than this.
Years later, when I became an audiophile, Wham’s “I’m Your Man” was (and still is!) an acid test. No ands, ifs, or buts, an audio product absolutely MUST nail “I’m Your Man.” If not, next!
My smarter audiophile readers have asked me what other titles has Sony Music Hong Kong put out on the K2-HD format. The little fold-out which came with Wham's The Final lists some popular music titles, a couple of jazz albums, plus some Asian artists. As this is my only K2-HD CD, I’m not sure how the other titles sound. I can, however, tell you that this is the best I’ve ever heard Wham.
Sure Wham! was bubble gum Pop at times, but those guys wrote excellent songs that would go on to become hits (big ones). Thanks for sharing Lummy!
