Is there considerable difference between digital out implementations of dedicated transport or high end CD player vs low/mid-fi player? I am eyeing a mid-fi CDP because I like some extra features, but not sure if cheap digital out implementation may affect the sound even if used with decent outboard DAC. Please chime in.
Thanks,
Serge

Does your DAC support an AES/EBU input? That is significantly better than the standard RCA based SPDIF connectors. If you are confident with a soldering iron I would suggest considering a reclocking module to reclock the SPDIF data to a transormer coupled output and put either a BNC SPDIF output (on both DAC and transport) or XLR. With care, you could easily turn the mid-price CDP into something better than the dedicated transport.
If you aren't into rolling your own, you can buy a tentlabs XO3.2 which is very good (although quite pricey if you include the choke regulated DC power supply)

Thanks Anthony. The player I was concidering is a no go for unrelated reason. I'm going with one box solution, most likely TEAC CD-P800NT, as soon as there's more info available on it in US.
Yes, there usually is a noticeable difference. Suggest you research whatever player you are considering carefully and see if you can arrange a home trial with your dac before buying.
Thanks Niws. I am considering TASCAM CD-200SB as it suppose to have nice transport and the ability to play WAV from SD card or USB pen drive. No way to audition.
