I think Peter Qvortrup just discovered how good an "old technology" R2R ladder type DAC can sound. The details are murky, but if this old technology pans out (and he already says the prototype sounds better than his existing Dacs), he will replace all the high-level DACs in circulation with the new models and then work down from there.
I understand that the implementation is quite complex to make by hand: many resistors. That has to be worked out so production can be speeded up.
That's all I know.
Oh, he says the cost will be about 1/2 the current AN DAC prices, but i"m not sure how certain this is.

It's not clear to me what Qvortrup is refering to here. AN have long utilized the AD1865 DAC chip in all of their DAC boxes. The AD1865 is already an 18-bit R-2R device. I suspect that AN's stock of the AD1865 is running out, and they have had to switch to some other DAC chip because the AD1865 has long been obsolete (no longer manufactured). If AN has built a new DAC box based on some chip other than the AD1865, and which sounds better than their AD1865 based products, any superiority cannot be due simply to their 'new' use of R-2R conversion. Frankly, Qvortrup's statement smacks of marketing hype to me.

I don't know what chip he is using and i don't fully understand the technology he is using. Nor is there much information about it. But the fact that he thinks it will cost 50% of what it costs to build his highest quality dacs currently in production is suggestive that the change is big. He is also switching Dac production to Croatia from one of the Baltic Republics, where they are currently made. This suggests that the idea may have been partly of Croatian origin.

Except for the Audio Note entry level dac all the AN dacs use the no longer made analog devices 1865 chip This is a R2R ladder dac and audio note uses no over sampling, no digital filters and no analog filters although the transformer they use to load the dac does act like an analog filter. I have the AN 2.1b dac which I like a lot but recently obtained a dac which uses 8 parallel phillips tda 1843 dacs. And I like this dac even better. Very musical, which is what prompted my original question. What do we mean by musical equipment. To me it is an emotional connection to the music. A very natural presentation of the music which engages you and never lets go. Unlike what some others have said here "musical' components can have as much detail and frequency extension as any other component. I am really enjoying the viewpoints being expressed here and also enjoy the fact that the fighting and sniping has been kept to a minimum. See, we can all get along
