I am sure that there is much in what you say about filters. As a dCS user I have numerous sample rate/filter combinations to play with. The latest iteration of their asymetric ( non-ringing) filter coupled to the latest spdif protocol obviates the need for upsampling for the most part IMO.
I too owned an early Philips oversampling player. Not sure about 1983 as CD wasn't introduced in Europe until that year. The first Philips players from that time were 14 bit devices with actual performance of around 11 bits. I think 1985/6 more likely for oversampling.
Follow Ups:
The first Philips player on sale was, I think the CD-100. That's the player that made it to the states as the FD1000 sold as a Magnevox.
I know the first players were sold in Japan as early as LATE '82

Too much is never enough
Yes CD 100, had one of those too. I was confusing oversampling with bitstream.
