I use a SB III with an external DAC and find it a lot better than the analog out from the SB. Emotiva offers value but you can do a lot better and should. My DAC recommendation is the Neko Audio DAC. They have a 30 day trial program too. It uses a transformer on the digital in and is a passive DAC. Very smooth!

There is one on Audiogon now for $835, not affiliated etc.

I think that your system deserves better.
For example, my Bifrost is great, but I knew that my bi-amped Maggie 3.3s would benefit from a more resolving DAC, and I was not disappointed at all w/ my Octave.
Second on the Bifrost. I had the XD1 and the Bifrost is way up there in performance.

thanks, that unit certainly has some fine reviews. I was even considering the ML 360 on Agon but wasn't sure if that would be considered overkill for the Squeezebox.
If I see a marked improvement with the Emotiva, and the ML 360 is still around, I'll send the Emotiva back and make that leap.
I guess the Emotive will help. I haven't tried it but based on what I hear on Emotiva is a good value but one can do better sound-wise. Then again it is only $269 or so.
