So far, he is the only person who sounded confident that he could fix it. A number of other shops have told me it's not repairable, including a local repair shop I took it to. I paid $45 troubleshooting fee just to have them tell me parts aren't available.
Also, the guy in Israel has a write-up about another Arcam player he went through; he sounds very knowledgeable and thorough. Here is the link:

Ahh now I see. I go back to my initial notion that it's likely better to buy something newer. I think you'll find you can do better than Arcam these days and it probably won't cost you as much.
Well I was going to say given the parts availability question then why not approach the original manufacturer as they are most likely to have a stock of original parts. However that report from the Israeli engineer is pretty impressive.
So it's back to the question of the value of repair v. replacement. I guess only you can judge that as only you will know the emotional connection that you have with this machine. Of course a good replacement may cost more than $500. As you obviously like the Arcam I would not spring for another machine without the opportunity for a lengthy audition.
