One of the best sounding CDs of any format in my collection is Mahler’s 5th symphony by James Levine and the Philadelphia Orchestra RCA ADD 1977.
I have two versions: one made in Japan and the other the USA as part of a complete set of Levine’s Mahler. So impressed was I with the Japanese pressing that I bought the American-made complete set. However, the US made version of the 5th is not nearly as good as the Japanese. The others are no better than mediocre. Note that the Japanese is not an XRCD or a JVC K2.
I agree with mbnx01 (see his post below) that XRCDs are very expensive. However, as a group, my Japanese disks, regardless of format, are the best sounding of all.
Follow Ups:
i repurchased the grateful dead studio discs on SHM and they blew away the crappy CD pressings that originally came out. PHIL PHIL PHIL.
OTOH, haven't compared the SHMs vs the Rhino reissues
I have bought a few of the Rhino reissues of the Dead, and in every case, they blow away the original CDs. You can get them very cheap if you want to give it a try. I have never tried SHMs, but it sounds like I should. Do you have a link?
Dave
No, these are not SHM-CDs.
Blow away their U.S. counterparts.
I have maybe 10 or so SHM-CDs or their competition's equivalent. They are very good, but this is different.

PS. Damn auto correct.

I believe their sonic quality has to do with care in the mastering process and especially attention to minimizing jitter.
So you are talking about jitter inherent in the mastering process which would be independent, but added to the jitter in the D/A process. Is that correct?
Dave
The Japanese discs that I have are among my best sounding.

Just like Japanese vinyl, cd's from Japan sound better to me. Recently bought a Sony Blu Spec cd2 from cdjapan which sounds fantastic.
They don't keep stuff in print for very long over there.I do like this 5th, though some folks can't take the trumpet playing.
The 6th is another great one.
The one Levine recording in that BMG box that I wish could be made listenable is the 9th. Ugly recording.
Link below is my preferred way to enter the HMV site.
