This is an unsolicited glowing post about the Bifrost Uber. I bought a Bifrost about 12 mos ago based on 'buzz' and a desire to do something with my CD jewel boxes. The foray into computer audio has gone pretty well. I really liked the sound of the Bifrost and the versatility. It was a lot more open and detailed than my entry level DAC. The nagging worry about the company's ambivalence towards USB always was there, however.
So I ordered the Bifrost and USB 2 upgrades. I waited… Turns out the box was lifted from my front porch (very sleepy neighborhood). Alex at Schiit was extremely helpful, understanding, and once it was clear that the damned PCBs had been stolen the new package was sent out immediately via expedited shipping. No hassles at all.
The boards were installed very quickly and I marveled at the quality of the boards, the elegance of the design and the clean layout. The workmanship and engineering that went into this thing are just so far beyond what you would expect from a product in this price point. I haven't had a lot of components with this level of "wow, that's a nice piece of gear. I 'm really proud to own it" feeling (I have had a lot of components over the years). Made in the U.S.A. like a p-51 mustang- everything seems to just have come together.
It sounds really, really really good. The original Bifrost was no slouch, but this is noticeably much better. I am sorry I waited so long for the upgrade, however. Much airier, smoother and more detailed. More fun to listen to and engaging, and still settling in.
Cheers to the gang at Schiit (Mike, Alex et al.) for making really enjoyable, well built, and affordable products. They've really won my loyalty.
I don't see much need to spend a lot more on a DAC (I'm mainly into analog) but a nice headphone amp might be worthwhile... Either way, I think it is hard to go wrong with this company.
Follow Ups:
I have had a Schiit Audio Bifrost for well over a year, close to two. I also upgraded to the Uber. It's just an outstanding DAC for the money. I have an older Benchmark DAC1, and the Bifrost is about 1/3 the price. I think they are equal in performance. The Bifrost to me is just very musical and natural sounding when using a CD player output.I think it's great...

Hello, i would be interested to know the composition of your actual digital front end and how are you using the Dac ?
with a pc connected to the usb port ?
I looked at your system but did not find an answer.

I am running a MacBook Pro (older) with audirvana / itunes. I have been using the USB and integer mode on Audirvana. Rips from CD using ALAC. Just getting into HRES, and not sure I want to dive in... My main goal was to deal with the CDs everywhere.
The original USB implementation seems much improved with gen2. The optical sounded pretty good, but now I think this is not the best route.
Audirvana is really nice and definitely makes a difference.
I have some audioquest USB cables that may or may not make a difference.
The sound is pretty darned. Good.
Sorry for the late reply
I have a Mac Mini with a SSD drive. I use my Bifrost in USB and have my music on an external hard drive connected with firewire. I used optical but I don't think it transmits the high res files. At least it didn't with my old DAC. I also use Audivarna. I am very happy with my set up.

Hello no problem and thanks a lot.
Indeed a great dac ... i read the Stereophile review also, maybe it was Gen 1 model.
But the reviews are all so positive that leave no doubt about the sound quality of the unit. Great achievement for Schiit.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,

I have a Bifrost as well. MacBook Pro running Pure Music USB connection to Bifrost. CDs ripped full resolution AIFF. I am experimenting with HiRez also. Sounds great. My previous Scott Nixon DAC also sounded great.
Thanks a lot for the kind reply.
I understand the high quality of the unit.
I guess the results are equally good using every ports (i.e. usb and spdif).
Kind regards,
bg
I've only tried USB and optical. Both sound great.
.
Kind regards,
