but why are there some preamps with built-in DACs?
Same sort of question: why DACs in Meridian active speakers?
Is that simply not a source of redundancy and additional cost?
Thanks.

You will only typically have one level of digital to analog conversion. No redundancy. Main reason for additional DACs is because the original did not have all the inputs needed or support a particular format. Today most good DACs have all inputs though many pre-amps with integrated DACs will likely be missing USB (though more and more support USB). In that case, USB conversion is required.

I may need an amp, preamp, phono, and DAC, all in one. That's right, an integrated amp with DAC for a small office setup.
The DAC in a preamp may be for folks who want a way to play music files and not have to bother with an external DAC. (same as for years folks had the phono pre inside the basic preamp)
As for digital speakers.. another way to do stuff.
Then nothing needed except a digital source with volume control..
Everything else is in speakers. No preamp, no amp. simplicity.
Just like some folks want separate preamp and amp. and others want them combined in an integrated.
For years the integrated was totally out of favor. And now it is coming back as a popular form.
