For the term “design principles” I was referring to the final outcome, not necessarily the topology, chips etc. ie. The Schiit “house sound” may be similar to the Theta “house sound”.
As far as sibilance…it drives me crazy… but I did not detect any increase in sibilance from the Bifrost. It is something I really listen for. I will try to concentrate more on sibilance the next listening session though.
Follow Ups:
I was just listening to MJ Billie Jean via Slacker Radio piped through both my Sony Blu Ray and the Bifrost. The Bifrost had de-emphasized sibilance when compared to the Sony. It may be that the Bifrost is just overall warmer sounding, and therefore the resonating ssssss's are pushed more into the background. Not sure, but things are definitely more pleasant sounding through the Bifrost.
Perhaps other DAC's do an even better job at sibilance as stated in a previous post. All I can say I am happy with the performance of the Bifrost over my previous set-up in this respect (and many others). It is nice that there are many fine choices for good-sounding, yet generally inexpensive DAC's.
I would have to agree. Whatever the faults of the Bifrost, excessive sibulence is not on that list IMHO. I posted a fairly lengthy review of the Bifrost with an additional eval after a couple months of ownership over on HiOnHifi. My only connection to Schitt Audio is the fact that I own and enjoy the Bifrost Dac.
I never heard sibilance produced by my DAC in my system, but on "County Fair" on the "Look What I Did" Joe Walsh CD, the sibilance seems extreme. It was fairly intolerable before, but the Bifrost makes is sound smooth and tolerable.
