It's newer, and has more bits, but that does not necessarily translate to better sound.

IMO it actually does...
The extra bits go deep into the noise floor. Switching randomly on and off.
A 20 bit DAC goes to -120 dB. So whether it's 4 extra bits or 12 extra bits, IMO they don't do anything to enhance the music signal.
And since there are 8 extra bits switching on and off per sample (relative to 24 bits), that's more RFI generation.

When we get to a certain level the differences do get smaller, but as far as what I listened to the ESS has been the best.
