I just purchased a low cost USB dac with I2S output. I am unable to get it to talk to my Northstar 192 dac via the I2S input. I get signal and pretty good sound over the SPDIF, but no go on I2S.
I would like to check if it is a pinout mismatch. The USB dac has pinout info, but I don't know pinout config for the Northstar. Does anyone have this info?
TIA
John O.
Hi John:
Are you saying that you are trying to drive the Northstar DAC from the Teralink device?
The pinouts are different so one of the cables would require modification.
Also, the output levels from the Teralink may not be compatible. The Northstar I2S input works with the ESI Juli@ card with the custom cable, and Juli@ output is 3.3V. The Teralink is USB powered so is going to be 5V.
I don't know if anyone has successfully connected these two. I would do a more thorough search of audioasylum, head-fi.org, diyaudio.com.
Wacky,
I have a well modded Northstar 192 transport and dac combo running I2S connection. My goal was to add computer audio capabilty via I2S. A search for USB+I2S pointed to the Teralink on ebay for short $$'s. It has reasonably good sound out of the box over SPDIF, but the Northstar has always sounded better via I2S connection.
The pinouts are a mismatch, but with that corrected - still no go. I get a weak signal lock at the dac, but no sound. It could be voltage (as you suggest) or sample rate mismatch - the Northstar combo upsamples to 192 in the transport section when I2S connection is used. The dac may be looking for 192 at input.
Thanks again for the helpful info. I'll keep searching the forums.
This thread has the pinout near the last post, and this poster is knowledgeable.

Wacky,
Thanks very much. The post lists the exact same units I an trying to connect. The pinouts helped make sense of it. Unfortunately, these two products won't sync via I2S.
