The full visceral impact of a real bass drum is sometimes disturbing after listening to hi-fi. But I'm sure there are some well recorded examples of solid deep bass on CD to satisfy the occasional need I have for earth shaking deep powerful bass. Repeated playing of Billie Jean or dance music helps, but I could do with a few more suggestions.
If it's bass that you are looking for, I'm not sure you can do much better than Sunn 0))). Sometimes referred to as "sludge metal," slow and low is how they roll. Incredibly visceral low stuff. Their most recent album "Monoliths and Dimensions" is fantastic. Not for everyone, but something that I think any basshead should check out. Totally enveloping.
And if you ever have a chance to see them live, do it. I just saw them in Chicago. Wow. What a sonic experience. They crank the smoke machines, wear long heavy cloaks that totally obscure their faces and deliver wave after wave of bass. They are touring now.
The band recommends "playing at maximum volume for maximum effect"
That's very nicely recorded. Brian Blade has some serious percussive chops.
Most things by Kodo tend to have some interesting bass effects (for instance, the album 'Ubu Suna' or 'Irodori') and great music. Korn's 'See You on the Other Side', my favourite being 'Coming Undone'. Bill Bruford's 'Footloose and Fancy Free' (Live in London) is fun and closely mic'ed. Those recordings all seem to track the dynamics quite well and with compression reduced to a minimum.
More compressed but just as much fun might be 'The Power' by Snap. Tears for Fears were always big on bass power 'Songs from the Big Chair' and though he's very mainstream, Justin Timberlake's album 'Futuresex' is well produced but few people hear how good it is (even on typical lucid but anaemic/dynamically compromised audiophile systems). Timberlake, of course, will tell you that he modeled himself on Michael Jackson.

I'm very impressed by the music and sound of Kodo, but I will look into all your recommendations. I have to draw the line at Korn who with titles like "See you on the other side" should be on the comedy circuit.
Regards, Don.
the selections are of different genres than I listen to.
Suggest Frederick Fennell's recordings with the Eastman Wind Ensemble from Mercury hybrid SACD or just the RBCD, or Cleveland (Orchestra) Winds in the classic series digitally recorded to SACD hybrid or just plain RBCD of same. Also, try any early Telarc digital recordings of the Cleveland Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony, St Louis Symphony. Their method of recording bass drum thwacks was infamous.
Oh, where is Teresa when we need her? Ha ha ha.
Thanks to all who replied. I have got hold of most of the recommendations and am very impressed esp about Kodo, Yello, Brent Lewis and Pantha Da Prince which were particularly thundersome. Don
is from Charlie Byrds self titled direct to disc album which the Laserlight label put on CD from the master lacquer NOT a tape. Track two, "Old Hymn", during the drum solo. Most dynamic snare too.

Question "Authority", the mainstream media sucks - Go Independent and hold BOTH parties accountable instead of just the other guys!
I need music to help forget the reality of today
Have not played it in years but I recall it.
Kal
I used it as a demo many times- lots of fun!

Have no idea what the Norwegian lyrics mean, but the bass and percussion are impressive.

The recordings I have heard from her have lots of deep bass.

The clickable link below is to a cut off the CD. Great stuff.
Look up "Drummers of Kodo". A full scale 24 piece Japanese musician group which includes at least one 1000lbs. drum. Trust me, you will feel that one if your system allows for it
