Hi all,I have have this DAX-2 since the 90's and it has always served me well. Recently, I plugged it into a preamp where the grounds for both channels were shared, and since then the crystal lock drops out for a fraction of a second every few minutes. I tried changing inputs (coaxial to aes) but it still happens.
I seem to remember being warned upon purchase that there was a component (resistor?) that could burn out if grounds were shared. So some questions:
1. Does anyone know how to fix this problem, or
2. Better yet, can I use this DAX-2 to build a great DAC that would use a faster sampling rate than it's current 44.1 redbook (and HDCD) capability? I build my own tube amps/preamps, but I don't yet know anything about building DACs. I would like to be able to download at least 192kHz quality music and use my sound card to output to the DAC.
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Specs from data sheet:
24 bit data paths
20 bit, 8x oversampling multibit, isochronous dual mono converters
2 stage crystal pll
jitter cutoff below 1Hz
3 toroidal mains transformers, multiple ground planes, 36 independently regulated rails.
Single ended fully discrete class A current to voltage converter for analog stage.
Locking time 8 sec., Crystal range +- 100ppm

Thanks,
I'm now in touch with AudioSynthesis. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Email Audio Synthesis; they are very helpful.
Thanks fmac. I contacted AudioSynthesis like you suggested and they were very helpful.
It turns out that there is nothing wrong with the unit after all. We've had a lot of snow/sleet/rain and therefore flooding, and the local utilities were drilling and pumping down the road a ways. The stereo was set up on one dedicated circuit, and every time the voltage dropped, the transport slowed and I lost crystal lock. The giveaway was when the sound started dropping out on the phono, which is all analog from cartridge thru speakers. At that point, the voltage drop even had the amps drop off, and the investigation began.
Voltage is back to constant, but now the dax is hooked up to the auzentech card in the PC. The card is set to output 44.1 kHz stereo to the dax, which outputs to an SE EL84 tube amp, to KLH model 17 speakers. Watched Scorcese's Madame Butterfly this weekend and it sounded great.
Thanks again for the help!

Perhaps Ric will chime in here, or you could drop him an email at EVS.
