In Reply to: RE: I'm all for PS Audio's new DAC to be able to improve on Burmester,... posted by Sunya on February 03, 2009 at 15:58:27
I hope you agree that the Burmester 001 would be a respectable transport.
Follow Ups:
Without question! It just seems an investment not worth it IMO, to have a 12K Euro transport just to read CDs. From a mechanical point of view it's an exquisite machine, but to me it's just that, a very fine audio jewel just like a Zenith or Vacheron Constantin in the luxury watches market. From a purely performance point of view, no matter how sophisticated is the mechanism of a watch like that, it will never match the precision of a cheap quarts model. Likewise, in the digital audio world, I'm sure the new PS Audio PerfectWave Transport ($3K) will have much better measured performance, not to mention it will be able to read hi res WAV and FLAC files burned on a blank DVD, so there is no need of a PC anymore to listen to hi res files.
If I would be in your place I'd sell the Burmester CD player (not sure if it would be easy in this economy), I'd buy a PWT and pair it with the best DAC I could afford and like. But that's just me...
Just of curiosity, how will you control the volume if you connect directly the DAC to the power amps? It seems in this case you would need a DAC with an integrated volume control in it.
Absolutely. Preferably a unit with a variable output of 8 volts. The Burmester 001 is 5 years old and an upgrade is in order.

My thanks to Sunya, Jovy and everyone else for their input. For your information, the 001 has a built-in active preamp with adjustable gain up to 8 volts in balanced mode which I use to directly drive a pair of Linn Klimax 500 Monoblocks. Please click on inmate systems under K for a breakdown of my main system, Again my thanks. Anxiously awaiting the marketing of the PS Audio Perfect Wave DAC. I would prefer the DCS Elgar but the price is prohibitive at this time.

Kenneth, other options would be the Berkeley Alpha DAC, the Wadia models and the MSB models with the volume modules installed. The PWD, the Berkeley and the Wadias employ a digital volume control, but with upsampling and when listening to 24 bit material I don't think there would be any resolution loosing problems.
Also, check the Prism Orpheus multichannel AD/DA, it has a volume knob assignable to any or all the analogue outputs.

The Elgar you would have to buy used because it was discontinued when the Scarlatti line was introduced.
Have been advised that the DCS Scarlatti is not compatible with my existing PS Audio "multiwave" power regenerator and a preowned Elgar/Elgar + would be a better choice. Currently researching all other mentioned DAC's. Thanks for all your help.
