If you're using the digital output from anything an external DAC is implied, isn't it? In my case it's a Proceed PDSD (digital processor). I suspect the DAC in the HR 10-250 is low-end, because most customers take the analog output to their TVs, and take the digital to their pre-pro or receiver if they have such. Are you using DirectTV as a source for music?

All the other DTV boxes (mainly RCA) I've seen had one, so I was a little shocked.I'd like to try an external DAC for the music channels. I'm not currently using an FM tuner.

Mine does.As for using the XM music channels, don't for a minute think that the external DAC will make a difference. They are low-res and sound horrible. I switched back to FM when DTV switched to XM last year. I always liked the MusicChoice channels but I seem to be in the minority about that.

Why did yhey switch to XM? I don't have a lot of choice in FM channels;variety is limited and reception is spotty without a huge antenna. The DTV box needs to go, no matter what. There's a scratchy distortion in the left channel that's driving me crazy.
