If you're using the digital output from anything an external DAC is implied, isn't it? In my case it's a Proceed PDSD (digital processor). I suspect the DAC in the HR 10-250 is low-end, because most customers take the analog output to their TVs, and take the digital to their pre-pro or receiver if they have such. Are you using DirectTV as a source for music?

All the other DTV boxes (mainly RCA) I've seen had one, so I was a little shocked.
I'd like to try an external DAC for the music channels. I'm not currently using an FM tuner.

  Mine does.
  As for using the XM music channels, don't for a minute think that the external DAC will make a difference. They are low-res and sound horrible. I switched back to FM when DTV switched to XM last year. I always liked the MusicChoice channels but I seem to be in the minority about that.

    Why did yhey switch to XM? I don't have a lot of choice in FM channels;variety is limited and reception is spotty without a huge antenna.
    The DTV box needs to go, no matter what. There's a scratchy distortion in the left channel that's driving me crazy.
