The LS3/5a was an amazing speaker when it came out. But it is far from state of the art today. And it follows that if you love what the LS3/5a does you won't be thrilled by more modern designs. I owned and loved a pair in the late 70s. And I can understand why people love its sound but it isn't accurate by today's standards.

I owned the Rogers since 1977. I loved the sound. Perhaps I wouldnt have if the sound were accurate.
I think a reviewer should look at the listeners' goals rather than the designer's.

How can a reviewer look at a listener's goals? They vary all over the place. He can only explain what's going on with the speaker. It's up to the listener to decide if the product might meet his goals. But explaining what the designer wanted tells us why a product performs the way it does.
Yes, agree with you. I wonder if there are surveys on generalised likes and dislikes of speaker buyers on how speakers should sound. Like for instance I cannot stand metallic sound which I heard even in Kef 50. Maybe the manufacturers know and they give directions to the designers based on predominant preferences of the masses.

just as i didn't hear the metallic sound you mention, neither it seems that NG did not either. a possible electronics pairing mistake was made when you listened to them, OR i just haven't heard the frequency range in which that sound lies.

Though this post is about a review, count me in as an enthusiast over Marantz digital sources. I did not know there were others who knew this "secret".
Paul Seydor again picks a winner at a reasonable price.
