"How could such keen eared audiophiles disagree so radically?"
Were the views expressed regarding the KEF in S'phile the first time you read differing opinions in a hifi mag?
Did you just get to this site for the first time a few minutes ago? AA inmates are constantly/endlessly disagreeing about everything.
Has it occurred to you that its possible to listen to the KEF's yourself and employ your own ears in a decision making process? Would it be a stunning surprise to you if your ears led you to a different conclusion than that stated by some mag reviewers?
Jeez.

What would be the point of going out of my way traveling at least 70 miles round trip to seek out a speaker someone respected enough to write for this premiere magazine thinks sounds like a thick metallic membrane heard through a squeezed hose? It isn't worth the bother.
"AA inmates are constantly/endlessly disagreeing about everything."
Well yes but their opinions are of unknown reliability. I've never met anyone who posts here. How do I know if they aren't say half deaf from listing to blaring rock music while they were high on weed or something? The writers for the magazine do it for money. Their opinions are considered valuable...by someone.
"sounds like a thick metallic membrane heard through a squeezed hose"
Any audio reviewer who writes such meaningless drivel quickly loses my interest. What on earth does that verbiage mean? It's just flowery lanuage (which we might call a purple patch) indicating he doesn't particularly like the speaker. Otherwise informative? No.
So, if you think HR's tastes match your own, you might not bother to listen to the speaker. If you think 70 miles is too far to drive, don't. If you are looking for a good small speaker, you might want to audition it based on several other reviewers' opinions.
Or, you might look at the superb measurements published in Stereophile (the horizontal and dispersion are stunningly good) or on Soundstage. For me I find measurements are more reliable than any subjective reviewer.

So your point...is pointless.
Herb wrote ..."Usually the sound of the KEF LS50 has a damped, almost metallic thickness or membrane-like quality, a hesitant or squeezed-hose restriction of musical flow, that very slightly constricts the dynamic range. It's almost imperceptible"...
That makes more sense than how you butchered it.
"What on earth does that verbiage mean?"
I get the distinct impression he doesn't like it. Do you think that's what he meant to say? Like I said, I should go dumpster diving for a pair of NS10s or L3/5s first. A lot of people say they're not very good either and it may not be all that long if this reviewer is right that I'll find the LS50s there too. :-) In fact one pro said the reason they like the NS10 for editing is that if their recordings sound good on that speaker, they'll sound good on any speaker.
Cheerio!
You haven't been here long enough to know who's who and get an idea of their taste/knowledge, but after a while you will. Check out inmates' systems as well as their posts and you'll eventually get a pretty good idea of which deaf dolts to ignore :-) and which inmates are actually knowledgeable and have tastes/preferences similar to yours.
Like AA inmates reviewers' opinions often vary, and IMO there are plenty of 'em with rotten ears/taste. One guy made that comment about the KEF, other reviewers have not mentioned a metallic sound at all. I don't pay much attention to reviews unless at least 2 or 3 experienced reviewers I've become familiar with over the years and who seem to have similar preferences to my own agree that product X is excellent in parameters important to me.
Dunno what you think of the individual reviewers, but a number of 'em praised the KEF.
