Can't speak re Stereophile, but Hearst is doing the same thing: automatic renewals that I never authorised. They're negative option: you have to call to get them to cancel it. That's not legal here (anymore!), but I guess it is in the U.S.

I think you're correct re that "unordered merchandise" thing in the U.S.
Not the same in Canada (you have to return it at the sender's expense), though "negative optioning" is no longer allowed. Don't truly expect a U.S.-based company to necessarily know that though.
Anyway, I called the number given by my (unauthorised) automatic subscription renewals postcards and negotiated much better rates. Actually, they just gave me what I asked for first...I'll know better to try harder the next time!
