You're correct Doug. A good designer who knows what he's doing can get at least 95% of the way there with products like LEAP. I saw a friend do this with a much earlier version of LEAP over 10 years ago. And he told me the last 5% was just to adjust for his taste. But he could have stopped after the LEAP design alone.
What actually is left after a product like LEAP is how far and what direction you go in cabinet construction and also choices of crossover components from different manufacturers.

Hi,
Interesting to hear. Whether someone throws out 80, 90, or 95% isn't as important as saying that the best designers are getting most of the way there through modeling, measurements, etc.
But I still would not discount the final bit at all, or say it's unnecessary. Last month I was at KEF and I talked to Jack Oclee-Brown, who heads up acoustics there now. He had said that the Blade Two was most of the way there after the modeling and measurements, but there were some small things in listening that they didn't like, and worked out through a combination of ears and back to the measurements (and back and forth several times). The LS50 designer, Mark Dodd, told a similar story about that speaker. I wrote about this in my new editorial, which will be published September 1.
The point is, these guys are using measurements to get a lot of the way. But the listening is still critical and I've never found one who wouldn't include it as an important part.

Again reviewers are not posting measurements to help us design a product.
The reviewer is saying that this group of measurements can tell you what a component will sound like. Nonsense. Only listening to a product in your listening room will tell you whether it is for you. I love tubes, vinyl and ladder dacs. They all measure poorly yet most people who hear my system say it is the best they have ever heard.
