Not a big deal to me...he threw Richard V a bone with a bit of hyperbole...seen much worse.
But Atkinson's quotes are in Vandersteen 7A speaker advertisements. The unintelligent or naive viewing those ads are likely to think it's a credible endorsement.
Those who should know better should not tolerate such nonsense as it does nothing to improve the credibility of an industry that already lacks credibility, ethics, and ultimately performance.
Atkinson's endorsement says far more about him, his ears, his credentials, and Stereophile magazine than he obviously thought it would. Oh, and his tastebuds too, because I'm going to assume he was eating his favorite ice cream when he was listening to the Vandersteens.

while you have a point...who in their right mind, or better asked, is going to purchase a $50,000 speaker system based on some mindless quotes in a ad?
Better question, who do you know that is shopping for a $50,000 speaker who is naive or unintelligent?
You might find that more than a few big ticket item purchases are made by agents of the very rich , they are bought via research and professional recommendation....
The intended owner has never been to or seen the inside of a stereo shop ....
