Hi critics critics, you have to read Herb Reicherts latest article in Stereophile. It's a follow up to the Pioneer PLX 1000 turntable.First of all the article is captivating and made me go back to my stack of Stereophiles and look for the original article in March on the Pioneer. His article made we want that turntable more than a Rockport spinner or a Magico monolith! What he said in( finally) was with this Pioneer and the cheapest Shure cartride,50 bucks?,oh,and the Schitt American made 129 dollar phono preamp that he would be happier than the time he had a 30.000 dollar turntable,30.000 dollar cartridge, ect, ect. Does not this go against Stereophiles mission making a moot point and risking his believability as a hifi journalist or was he just plain honest and that's why his article grabbed me? Anyway, was Herb on herb when he said tracking your cartridge at 4.5 grams won't hurt your records in the least. To me that's like putting a penny on your AR turntables headshell, and since I didn't my old vinyl has remained pretty good I think. Will Herb be given a mega priced component to review after this article? Is he the new Steve Meg.? Herb is why subscribing to Stereophile goes ahead of paying important bills to me. Did anyone else read this July issue.....Mark Korda

Thanks! for sharing -Mark.
He mentioned several styli that will track nicely at 1.5 gms in that cart. Ne never said he would prefer it to a $30,000 set up - just that he could LIVE with it nicely.
And no - 4.5 gms will not hurt your records if the set up is so designed. You would only place a penny on a setup that was unable to track properly.
Most damage is caused by too low a VTF! I have old records that were played with a GE Cart in the 50s that play beautifully.

Dunno about all that stuff you're concerned with, but I can say the Pioneer table makes great music here with a 2M Black cart and a Herbie's Way Excellent mat, set upon a 3" Maple Block over raquetballs.
See ya. Dave

No. Why should it be?

You do a quick review of the Pioneer PLX-1000 w/Shure SC35C. Use whatever stylus you like. Print your observations. Hell, you might sell-off your analog frontend afterward! Maybe Mikey would like to do a review also

At a local Guitar Center w/Shure M44G...
I think Herb is too invested in the PLX-1000 NOW to report the truth, IMO of course. Truth being that the PLX-1000 is just a decent entry level TT. Forget the $100K setup comparison he so lamely referenced in his 'Follow Up'
JA... why so quiet ?
