Interesting take..good points. The fact that Listener folded it may underscore the fact he is not really capable of carrying the weight of the whole ship. That's fine. Horses for courses as John Marks says.
Follow Ups:
Listener didn't fold, it was killed by its owners. Art sold the magazine to a publishing company that specialized in niche magazines for the very upscale horsey set. After a couple of years, they decided that while the magazine was (and always had been) profitable and growing ( Listener was on track to pass TAS in subscribers within a year or two), it wasn't profitable enough to suit them. So they closed it down.
Listener was not Art's only experience in the magazine world before Stereophile . He had worked at Backpacker magazine, was editor of TAS , and had written for Hi Fi Heretic and Sounds Like.. before Listener .
Hi Fi Heretic is just about the best name for a magazine. :)
