I have no idea what this is alluding to, but it is obviously a follow-on to the previous postings on the ethics of magazine awards and the expectation that recipients will become advertisers. Given the vagueness of this comment, I will take the liberty of equating "award" with "reward" and note that there was an audio journalist whose body of work consisted largely of recounting the many visits to European manufacturers; the journalist is wined and dined by the manufacturer and is often rewarded with a nice write-up. I am not saying that the journalist did anything wrong, but, the friendships developed and social obligations from being generously hosted certainly must make it harder to be completely objective in reporting about the gear. From the side of the hosts, I think it is only natural for the host to think that it is "good for the business" to offer such enticements (thousands of Washington DC lobbyists cannot be wrong about this).
So how is this fundamentally different from the awards given by magazines? While the magazine may be truly not tying the granting of awards to advertising, the manufacturers may suspect that there is some relationship and this may influence their decision toward advertising. This is inherent in the relationship between the manufacturer and magazine when it comes to awards or reviews, as it is also the case with any friendship between the journalist and manufacturer.

And it's no different in any other field of play.
All I know is, any audio rag or website looking for a write up from from Italy... I will gladly provide a few paragraphs if I can sample the chianti.
Do I know you? Meet you at CES maybe? Or is there another Larry I out there? My apologies if I should remember....
