At the time AD reviewed (several times) the restored Thorens TD 124's I was involved with, I had never advertised in Stereophile in any form of fashion; ever, but I did exhibit at CES, Montreal, Rocky Mountain, and the then Stereophile Audio Shows.
At the Time MF reviewed the Brinkmann Balance turntable/tonearm/phono cartidge (nominated for product of the year). Brinkmann was never advertised in Stereophile with me as the importer or ever.
At the time AD reviwed the Brinkmann/EMT phone cartridge (nominated for product of the year) Brinkmann had still never advertised in Stereophile; ever.
At the time RD reviewed the Avantgarde Uno loudspeakers, through me as the importer, Avantgarde had not advertised in Stereophile in over a decade.
Hows' s about them's apples??
Follow Ups:
It seems to me we see a similar pattern on products with no advertising link...Art Dudley. With very few other exceptions, ones you can count on one hand.
And are you at liberty to say how many times you received calls from Laura Atkinson to sell you ads after your products were featured?
I love your qualifiers.."at the time"...
Restored products? C'mon.
Some have.
Here's a link to my 2014 Holiday Gift Guide. You can do the math.
The pictured headphones got a great mention, they never advertised and I would be very surprised if anyone had called them about advertising.

Perhaps, you like the other poster are going off topic.
The thread was NOT titled:
"Stereophile only reviews products from advertisers".
I simply said those that get dinged for quality, value, or performance tend to be overwhelmingly from non advertisers, pip squeaks who can't pull dollars.
At the end of the day, listening (as far as I can recall) only to vinyl, and further, (as far as I can recall) listening only to single-ended phono stage or stages, and also (as far as I can recall) listening only on one pair of speakers (that only the 1% can afford), Michael Fremer, as is his right and duty, stated that the sound of the Bricasti amps was not to his liking.
MF did not say they burned down his house.
MF did not say they emitted high-pitched noises that made his dog or dogs barf.
MF did not say they crapped out and gave up.
As far as I can recall, he said he preferred more "metal" in the sound.
OK!
I prefer Chardonnay to almost every unblended Sauvignon Blanc I have ever tried. Now you know!
Whereas in the number of years I have been reading Stereophile (since circa 1973--the Pembroke library had a subscription), the Bricasti M28's square-wave graph was the purtiest picture I have ever seen in a Measurements section.
And the distortion measurements would have been inconceivable at the time I started burning myself with soldering irons.
So, with 'bated breath, I for one await JA's remarks, because then, Rome will have spoken and all controversies will be ended.
Um, that was ironical.
ATB,
jm
well, I really enjoyed your post..nicely done..
no MF did not say the amp scared the dog or burned the house down..lol.
But when you conclude with the notion "these would be a great match for my previous speakers, which I dumped for these far better ones", it seems a rather severely backhanded situation.
Years ago Sam Tellig told me that his house would have burned down except for the fact that when one the amps he was breaking in popped, snapped, and caught fire, he was sitting right there.
It later (allegedly) turned out that the US importer had monkeyed with the tube bias to make the sound more lively, but further investigation showed that the spacing of the tubes on the chassis was less than called for in the tube specs, so the tubes were (allegedly) on the brink of runaway anyway.
When I wrote for TAS, three samples in a row of a high-power solid state integrated had one channel pop but the amp did not shut down, the heat sinks just got MUCH hotter than an electric oil-filled radiator. Even the power cord was VERY hot as I pulled it out of the wall.
It turned out much later that they could not trace the failures because there were "weak" power transistors, but it was not the weak transistors that failed. The normal transistors tried making up the difference, and it was they that burned themselves up.
In the event, the importer, not an old man, died in his sleep, and the manufacturer was hurrying to lunch and had a catastrophic car wreck and later died from his injuries. The company went into administration and the assets were bought by new management who did not carry over any designs.
So, no need to publicize that.
And I have already in other posts alluded to Krell's little problem with a mandatory Consumer Product Safety Commission recall on amps that caught fire--a non-trivial number. IIRC 50. You can look it up. It is easy to Google.
So, my statement was not fatuous or risible.

John,
Shucks, I forgot, you reviewed the Brinkmann Integrarted with spectacular aplomb; also never ever advertised.
Thank you much for your continued writing, it is always a pleasurable and informative read.
I think that that integrated with onboard DAC was, sad to conclude, at least five years early.
I do try to stay active as a classical recordings producer and engineer, so I do attend pro audio shows and chat with engineers who are closer to the center of things, in an effort to discover great gear at fair prices.
Among others, that has led me to Benchmark, Grace Design, and Bricasti. Benchmark is an occasional advertiser. The others, as far as I know, not.
And here's the thing. Ads are not just "tribute" or blackmail. A good ad written by someone who knows how to write an ad can deliver real results.
John
I think you mostly took exception to the owners manual where I suggested, should you audition the Integrated, I would offer you and your dog a cookie :)
Truth: the review was much to early for the product as I didn't have a sufficient number of 'quality' dealers to meet the demand of the east coast and west coast customer base.
Laura: never, never ever, I did have dinner with 20 other audio people at the Montreal Audio Show with the then publisher 12 years ago and made breakfast for MF at CES 6 years ago.
"At the time" meaning via my involvement and not for some 15 years, Brinkmann has advertised in the last two issues.
Avantgarde, i dont recall since the review, certsainly none i paid for or know of in 7 years.
AD reviews items he has an interest in thus restored 50 year old Thorens turntables.
Perhaps you misunderstood my OP. I NEVER said Stereophile does not review products only supplied by advertisers.
I said that products under review not from advertisers overwhelmingly are candidates for the "negative" review.
And....i've never advertised or been directed to advertise or have been suggested to advertise and never have gotten a bad or contray review. If you really belive all of your conspiracy theories...take up a new hobby as you are exhausting and so very wrong.
Read, again, JA's response to you, even Mike Kuller (a good egg)
Lastly, Stereophile reviewed a loudspeaker from a then unknown loudspeaker company and I was never asked by anyone for advertising dollars or anything else relating to advertising and the review and the loudspeaker both sucked.
