In John's defense your original title and post doesn't say whether the preamps are tube or SS.

So how is it ok for him to bring up SS products not listed in Preamps but not ok for me to mention that S'phile can't find one single tubed pre under $7,500 to recommend? Whether tubed or ss pre's, the prices I typed in my OP are direct from S'phile.
The stuff Marks mentioned may have an analog section, but those products are dac's, and are listed under Digital Processors. Buy a ss dac for its analog section? No thanks, I already own a digital source I like, and I'm looking for a tubed preamp.
BTW - out of the 16 ss pre's listed, 4 are under $6,000 - 3 of 'em from the same company (Parasound) - one of which is 2.1 channel.
Well, I was only commenting on the fact that your original post didn't mention whether the preamps you listed (only the prices) were SS or tube.
I don't disagree that the prices are pretty silly these days. That said, I have heard some serious improvement as one pays more for a preamp...up to at least the $15K level. Beyond that I am not sure even though I have heard a few that were amazing (Kondo M-77 being a prime example).
I don't know why JM likes to plug this Grace stuff. I haven't heard it but based on it's design I would not expect magic.
I haven't heard an SS preamp yet though that can really go toe-to-toe with a top tube preamp. Not Pass, not darTZeel, not Boulder, not Soulution.
