I think TAS does a better job with recommendations of budget/entry-level gear, without the ABCD nonsense.
Follow Ups:
quoting Steve Carell (Gru) Despicable Me.
"ABCD nonsense."
I still remember the chuckles, when they introduced A+, A++ ...

Yeah, they couldn't bring themselves to bump gear already at A down to B and then later to C as higher rated gear came along. It would have also meant bumping some things clean off the list...a no no it seems.

I could only imagine the fuss if some popular component starts migrating down Stereophile's alphabet soup line, one "borderline" +/- at a time ...
(sigh)
But it would be pretty reasonable if the writers more or less agree that the latest Class A is truly better than the previous one. It is not always only about a new "flavor"...some gear really is superior to other gear...just no one wants to be upset anyone.
a simple synopsis of the gear reviewed should suffice, without any lot-based classification(s). Let the review/reviewer communicate it's merit, without the need to class.
Plus, SP uses different reviewers, with different expectations, different experiences, different "reference" systems ... different this, different that ... different gear in their own different vacuums ... yet some magical consensus suddenly occurs allowing them to pigeon hole each product within some classification.
Ridicules; why anyone would consider SP messy marketing based classification process remotely "reference" worthy - is beyond me.
