That's where Sam's readers are and always have been. I would kill for a loyal following like he has. And he leaves them behind because the editor complains about late copy? boohoo Or a late paycheck? Unless you're a salaried employee, how many of us write for the money? Raise your hand. Sam, quityerbitchin' and go back to your loyal readers who have supported you for so many years.
Just my opinion for what it's worth Probably not much lol

...agreed.
When you are one of the big attractions for a magazine's subscribers, it can go to your head and give you an inflated sense of self-importance.
If you can't meet a copy deadline how can you complain about late pay?
Hard to really know who saw themselves as a Lord.
JA seems like a nice guy doing the best he can under difficult circumstances with the magazine's changing ownership and a few writers with big egos.
There are 2 sides to this and we are hearing 1. Likely, that is all that we will hear.
Throughout, I wondered what Sam is trying to accomplish by doing this. If venting or casting aspersions is the objective; well done then.
Whenever I left a job, I had something else arranged beforehand. One thing I did not do is disparage the prior organization/people. Looking backward and lashing out did not seem productive. Of course, I did not work in audio, and did not have a forum like this.
I hope your PC problems have been resolved....

Thanks again for your help. I think I figured out at least a temporary solution. Opening up a second user account in another name got all the program files working again, but only when I use the second account. The original user account is still infected with the ransomeware virus and nothing works. I was able to restore most of the JPEG & GIF files so I was able to recover most of my photos. But I worry the virus will start migrating and wonder if I should just do a restore and hopefully be rid of it completely.
My sister also gave me a Nacbook PRO to use but I think it's too late to teach this old dog new tricks. Sis doesn't want it back so I might be finding it a new home. That thing is backwards you know lol
Sue
Go in under the 2nd account and get everything you can off that drive and onto a backup drive. Then re-format the infected drive and reinstall the OS and all your files. It's a real PITA, but it should end your problems forever.
Or at least until you go to another malware laden site and get yer arse infected again...[g] Ain't the internet a hoot?!

Sam's readership will follow Sam wherever he goes. Virtually all the reviews are available on the internet these days and I am quite sure a LOT of magazines would love to have Sam as a reviewer. Whether they can afford him might be an issue. Indeed, Sam could probably start his own webzine and hire a staff of reviewers. In fact he'd probably make much more money doing this and he calls the shots and doesn't have to answer to various suits with the moral and ethical integrity of Mr. Burns.
Readers will follow the writer IMO over the magazine.

...but she worked for TAS which was even worse.
I didn't realize just how dishonest Harley is until he decided he no longer needed my services. Sam should consider himself lucky. After 10 years, I didn't even get a "screw you" on the way out the door.
And Valin? The best writer in the world? He needs to get a clue as to what his staff really thinks of him.
Sue
Sue, It is a sad state of affairs that the audio rags didn't have more female reviewers. The females that did write didn't seem to last long. What does that say about the males in charge? In a real company these guys could never pull that kind of BS.
PS... I've never been a fan of Valin and tend to gloss over anything he writes, especially his reviews from audio shows.
How many women were there? Can anyone remember? And I was on staff at the time.
is that all diversity means to you?

Thanks! for sharing- Sue.
.....like secret photos of the reviewer anointing ceremony held in Vegas last month. I was de-frocked when Harley booted me out. I'm hoping to get my wings back at next year's ceremony.
And now I best get busy or I'll get myself in big trouble being a smart-arse. Today is equipment boxing day. Who doesn't look forward to that?
Sue
Sue,
have you been writing/reviewing for another publication lately? If so, how do I find your material?
I'm working on my first review for The Audio Beat, but don't tell anyone :-)
i hope it contains some substance.

Yeah, you have no private life. You are a 'National Treasure' and cannot make any choices which annoy your followers...
They may decide to hang you for not doing what they expect Sam...
I lasted for as long as I did by avoiding Mr. Atkinson and his gravitas. After Stephen and Ariel left, I had to deal directly. Stephen and Ariel were very helpful. Stephen even helped me (and the other unsalaried writers) get paid, although that was Atkinson's (shirked) responsibility, not his.
"Stephen even helped me (and the other unsalaried writers) get paid, although that was Atkinson's (shirked) responsibility, not his."
Typically, how long did it take you to get paid after submitting a review? No one enjoys waiting on their money after rendering a service. Creditors have a term for such people/institutions who systematically defer payment after receiving a product or service. Is this unsavory practice something new at Stereophile or has it been in place for years?
Usually, non-salaried (Form 1099) writers were paid within a week or so after an issue appeared. This was about 60 days after submitting copy.
("I cannot deal with late copy," snorted Lord Gravitas in an e mail, after years of intermittent late payments and a day after telling writers their payments would be several weeks late. This is what really set me off. Do you want to talk about being callous? rude?)
Payment became more irregular after Source Interlink took over. You can Google Source Interlink and see if the word "unsavory" comes to mind.
Sometimes Lord Atkinson just forgot about approving payments to writes. A piddling matter, that. If you're British why pay promptly?
At one point (during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy), I was promised payment within a few days ... only to learn that some bigwig had apparently put a hold on all payments to independent contractor writers. For all their magazines, I assumed.
They improved their cash flow at the expense of mine. Thank you and f*** you after 30 years.
This -- ahem, pause -- did not include the salaried executive himself nor the salaried Atkinson and those cronies he put on salary. (I didn't want a salary, by the way.)
Still, I kept my fury bottled up.
I never put up a fuss until payment was at least two weeks late. Then I would phone the underpaid Stephen Meijas, whose responsibility this wasn't, who stood up even as Lord Gravitas evaded and possibly abjured his responsibility.
How many times did this happen? I lost count.
Finally, I found myself paid up and fed up.
By the way, what does Stereophile do about delinquent advertisers?

To be fair, though, isn't that what editors have to do? I've always understood that the writer editor relationship is not an altogether harmonious one, by its nature.
It's not good to be paid late, time and again. I took the comment "Payment became more irregular after Source Interlink took over" to mean that this was to some extent out of "Lord Gravitas'" control, probably not everybody could be paid on time, in the circumstances. It doesn't sound like a good situation.
If ST isn't happy, I doubt if "Lord Gravitas" is either. It sounds like a difficult job.

I am very sorry to see this sort of thing on a public forum. Sam, I have admired your work very much for a long time, but the public airing of these kinds of private issues is not going to lead any reasonable person to decide them against Stereophile and, to me, is only going to tarnish your reputation among hobbyists who otherwise hold you in very high regard. Just saying, the rest is up to you.
.
I couldn't disagree more strongly. I've been a long time subscriber to Stereophile and TAS. Lately I have been thinking of dropping both magazines. Maybe as I get older I'm tired of reading about overpriced audio equipment.
I always figured I would renew out of loyalty. When I read this crap about how the reviewers get stiffed on payments for articles they wrote, it makes my decision to drop Stereophile that much easier.
These people who criticize Tellig about sucking it up for the loss of pay should go a few weeks after their employer withholds a paycheck. Then we would hear the complaining I'm sure.

Just interested in how Sam defines "liberal" ?
His points are well taken
Thanks.
I have no idea what "liberal" or 'conservative" has to do with this discussion.
I have a lot of conservative friends way into good audio. What's more, I know many working class guys who are way into audio who have systems you'd think were beyond their means but they SAVE for it and WORK for it.
If the point is that "liberals" are not supposed to like the rich (or are not themselves rich) I'd say too much Fox News watching has produced some bad results---like reading Stereo Review.

Face it, Fremer if you love Wilson, DartZeel, and Taralabs, you MUST hate America...LOL!

. . . and go to work as a copy writer for AudioQuest. A company with the gall to market $11,000 Cat 6 cables (specially treated with proprietary snake oil, no doubt) is bound to pay well, and on time.
Ha, chump change .....
"A company with the gall to market $11,000 Cat 6 cables"
I'd be more curious (and amused) with the individuals who are stupid enough to purchase them.
