I think their downloads can sound superb. I have purchased a few and have been impressed. Their archiving and mastering chain is high quality.
Follow Ups:
The sound quality on all of the recent HDTT releases that I have purchased has been very good to excellent, especially where the transfer was made from a master tape and not a production 2 or 4 track tape. In the years since HDTT got started the quality of the releases has continued to increase, in some cases because of better equipment, but mostly as the result of experience. In the early years I had some problems with a few of the releases and exchanged quite a few emails with the owner in the form of constructive criticism and suggested improvements. This is how our friendship began.
There is another company that sells downloads of out of copyright production recordings but these are poor quality, IMO, because of over-processing.

My experiences mirror yours..a steady improvement in quality, with variations depending on the source.
Several DSD128 and 192 transfers I purchased from them recently are stellar.
