Mr. Atkinson is free to reply, or not.
...for subscribers, perhaps.
Ooops, sorry that lets you out.
Whether the OP is a subscriber, you'd have to ask him.
Do keep in mind that Tom/Sam announced his departure in a rather cryptic manner on a public forum; in fact one 'right next door', so to speak.
Kind of opens up the question to everyone here, yes?
I was pleased to see that the response he received over on General was a warm one, thanking him for his years of contributions.
I do pick up a free copy about once or twice a year at the various audio shows, but certainly am not a subscriber.
Did pick up a copy of The Absolute Sound at the Gym the other day.
Read it in the sauna!
Does that count?
...an audiophile gym to pick up TAS there.
I'll be picking up a copy to read while I'm in Hawaii next week since I won't get the new Stereophile until I get back.
Kind of hard to tell the editorial content from the advertizements as it's the '2014 Product Of The Year Awards!' issue.
Looks like they tried to keep ALL of the advertizes happy.
You're reading TAS again?

...so ask away.
Maybe, but we are talking about a entity that exists purely for entertainment.
To that point, we as subscribers pay to be entertained.
This is no different than a NFL or college team making a coaching or player change. In that case the team puts out a press release, and/or calls a presser to explain to their fan base what happened, and why.
I don't need the sordid details (if there are any), but I would like to know if Sam was;
1) Fired
2) Forced to resign
3) Or decided to abruptly retire.
As long time readers of Stereophile, I think we should be given something of a explanation.

I'd guess either Tom had been thinking about ending his audio writing career for a while and sometime between submitting his last column and now decided this was the right time, health or family issues arose, or there was some kind of disagreement between him and S'phile management that spurred his sudden exit.I guess if Sam/Tom starts writing for some other audio publication we can surmise it was the latter. But if that's the case I don't see why S'phile readers have any "right" to know details.
I just hope Tom and his family are ok and health issues weren't the cause.

...We pay to be entertained by what "they" write, not by the details of "their" personal life. I guess I consider Hollywood, politics and sports to exist in a different realm than magazine writers. Maybe it would be a good thing if I the public didn't demand to be involved in the personal details of participants in those endeavors too.

It would be inappropriate to ask. It would be appropriate not to reply to an inappropriate question.

Grow a backbone. That's not a question.
It is not only a matter of social manners, there are also potential legal issues.
