Just heard HP has passed away.

It was the late 70s and I had shopped for my first modest stereo. Along the way, I had heard the Dahlquist DQ10 speakers in a shop where I saw the little magazine. The exotic items under review immediately became my vision quest.
I did not subscribe after that for a while. I decided that it was pointless to read about such ridiculous items as preamps costing $1000. But I got back and I have most of the issues since the early 80s (along with the first 4 I got by subscription).
The language may have been over the top and often I was not sure if what I imagined as "continuousness" had any relation to what the reviewer was trying to impart. Despite the vagaries of trying to accurately describe sensory impressions, I learned over time that when HP gave a good review to a product, it was worth investigating. I always looked forward to his reviews and turned to those first.
I somehow always thought that HP would be out there, at least online, telling me about some brand new piece of ridiculously expensive audio equipment that gets it right in ways that he never knew was possible. He just seemed like an Olympian presence out in the audio reviewing ether. I did not imagine he would ever be gone.
I am very very sad to read this news.
I have really enjoyed reading the Obit(s) by HP colleagues.
Because it is more relevant here, I'm breaking the rule and cross-posting (with editing):-You are familiar with my reference system.
-I'm substituting the component under review for the one I use regularly.
-Now I will play a recording of acoustic music that I have described many times and that is available for you to purchase.
-I will now describe what I heard, and how it differs from the reference.
-The component brings me closer to (or further from) live acoustic sound as I recall it in this or that respect; I go to such performances frequently.
-Additional discussion.
Compare that with the drivel passing for reviews and published virtually everywhere these days.

AND, a bit part of why it was the BEST, back in the day.
Some people may not realize that his reviews of the Infinity IRS 3 and V were done in spaces not terribly much bigger than most folks' living rooms.
The whole point of everything he did was to use his familiarity of LIVE music and sound as an absolute reference to what he could create in his space.
.
A giant is gone. I did not know him personally but the loss I felt was acute. He brought music and high end audio into my life. I have valued his reviews since issue one of TAS. Golden ears and literary skills to match. The audio community is diminished by his death. He will be missed.
R.I.P.
