Snippet: I had missed the news of the untimely September death of the 45-year-old musician Uppalapu Srinivas, who introduced an instrument often associated with the folk music of the southern United States — the mandolin — into the classical music repertoire of southern India. I like him not only for his music, which I recommend, but for the fact that he was so strongly associated with his instrument that in adulthood his name became, effectively, Mandolin Srinivas. We never had a Piano Gould or a Cello Rostropovich, though we did have a Johnny “Guitar” Watson.
Follow Ups:
Given that he had sadly passed away on September 19th.
A couple of quotes from John McLaughlin who talked about playing with Srinivas on "Remember Shakti", one of my favourite albums. An incredible musician who showed his talent at a very early age. I was quite saddened to read the article.
Regards,
Geoff
Mandolin Srinivas made the Mandolin an integral part of the South Indian Carnatic Classical music. A musical instument of the American South blending with the Veena and Violin sound along with Mridangam.
We all here are very sad he passed away when so many great recordings were yet to be made.
Bill
Sad news. I have many of his recordings. Thanks for posting.
