Hipster dufus? Reviewer wanna be? Insightful observer?
Follow Ups:
"For anyone following New Record Day, they already know that if their was any such thing of a “Rogue Audio fan-boy”, I would be first in line to buy the shirt."
There's a misspelled word and a grammatical error in the first sentence. Regardless of anything else in the article, any review that starts off like that is a FAIL.
Hey Sherwood,
Thanks for reminding me why I don't write any reviews! Looks like I am on the right track with the videos. With that being said, ill have Sarah (my wife) take a look at any blurbs I write from this day forward cause heaven knows I need the help!
Thanks

Hah! Sorry man, didn't mean to be harsh on ya (didn't know you were looking!). But seriously, I'll go back and give the video a look. Perhaps I rushed to judge when I saw the simple mistakes.
Cheers,
SF
Since the reviews are primarily in video format, I guess there was not much attention paid to the text.
Rogue, blah.
It seems you have been a naughty little boy, on top of being an absolute dolt.
A simple google search turned up this link. Tsk Tsk...
Stop being so mad that I don't want to be your boyfriend.
I know. You are more interested in kiddie porn. And now everybody knows it.
I will keep posting that link wherever I can.
Personally, I think hes a bit of a camera hog. My 2 cents.

Hello Ron!
Hey Sprezza! Hope I didn't crash this party. I saw decent spike in traffic and decided to take a look.

It's your party! Welcome aboard.
Quick question..I didn't see one with a casual glance..but what is your digital front end reference? Just curious.
Thanks Sprezza!Great question about digital... yea, behind my rack is an apple airport express that was being used to find new artists with Mog. As of late, its only used to play ridiculous hip hop songs my wife finds on YouTube. Before New Record Day, I had an all digital system using the stuff from peachtree that I liked a lot.
fantja,
I must have missed your email in the shuffle and I apologize. I typically respond within 24 hours... can you resend? Ron@newrecordday.com

I thought your Benchmark DAC video was clever. Nicely done.
But I can't help but be so presumptuous as to offer some constructive criticism.
You spent time reading off the spec sheet and feature list, where this is very readily available on numerous web sites a few mouse clicks away.
You did not spend much time on the sound, and quite frankly it seemed you really only used it on the desktop. There wee no comparisons to similar products. This is the problem with not having a digital reference. So it was great compared to what?
I also got a bit of a laugh in your Audio Art Cable review. You say you spent a week with it and it did not malfunction, so it got your stamp of approval for durability. That is pretty funny.
Keep up the good work..I find the ever changing facial hair interesting too!
Thanks Sprezza!
Your feedback is what I crave so keep it coming. The truth is, I describe myself as a "happy fish out of water" as I progress and learn as a reviewer. I don't pretend to know everything and will always try to improve where it makes sense without turning my reviews into a sales pitch.
That benchmark review was a tough one... I felt like I bit off more than I could chew and your comments are spot on. Anyone could read a spec sheet and walk away with just about 85% of the content from that review. I am always thinking of ways to get the important info covered but focus more on what the piece of gear sounds like or how it functions... its a fine line to walk.
Again, with the Audio Art Classics, totally right about that as well. Heck, I didn't even recall saying something like that in the review so I watched it again and started to chuckle... yea, I still have my work cut out.
Thanks
Ron

Your lack of outsized ego and open mindedness is refreshing.I for one, am a fan now. I think your format has great potential.
I am of the mind that the current format of high end audio reviews has run its course.
Your video production skills are quite excellent. My wife makes corporate videos for a living and I can tell you that you that you know what you are doing.
The only thing I would add is it would be great if you use some specific musical references..pick out one, or a few records for each review to play that is going to be a broad reference for many viewers and describe what you hear. I don't see you as a guy who has a collection filled with audiophile dreck.
Ballsy personal request: use some Dylan...John Wesley Harding!. I have or had that album on every format, CD, SACD, reel tape... :)

Sprezza,
Thanks again!
LOVE Dylan and think that's a really good idea! Have a recommendation on a specific pressing I should look for? I don't own a copy of that record yet...

Ron-
if you get a chance to audition, Stage III Concepts power cords- do so!
I was actually using that Dylan title just an example. I would not be so presumptuous as to choose your reviewing music. I just threw Dylan out there because I can't think of a single audiophile friend my age (mid 40's) or old school mate that does not have Dylan records or has not seem him live.
I am sure you have records in your abode that are part of the overall universal collection of most music lovers.
FYI,I don't have a turntable. My analog is R2R. But I have heard from multiple sources that the MoFi pressing is real good. I have the original Columbia 7.5 ips tape and that sounds just amazing!
You have to be really careful with copyrighted music. We have relationships with several labels for this reason. Dylan is a no go.
Actually I was not suggesting he actually play the record while filming the video..simply hold up the album, maybe show the needle dropping, then cut away to sonic descriptions.
I have contacted Ron and he is thrilled to be recognized. We are going to discuss reviewing opportunities with him. Thank you Sprezza you are the man! We are all in this together!
Great minds think alike Peter! Great news, I look forward to your collaboration. :)
We need younger folks "getting it" and spreading the word. Wouldn't it be nice if the High End got a lift from hipster chic? Could strengthen the market.
Yes indeed! Well said!
Any thought that he will be co-opted and compromise the qualities that you admire? Joining 'the club' will mean losing independence for the sake of gaining acceptance. Interesting problem. This guy has some real strengths, including his garb. :)
Co-Opted? Let's hope not!
And think he does a fine job. Entertaining and informative.
Can't ask for more than that.

You just like him because now you are a rogue man!!!
I was a Rogue man before being a Rogue man was cool. :)
PS: Funny story about how I got into Rogue. I had a really nice local dealer (now deceased, may he rest in peace) and asked him - 'if I bought a Rogue preamp and power amp and my buddy bought the same set would we get a smokin price?'.
And we did. Still remember how fun it was, him and me going down to pick up our gear. Metis and ST-90.

You won't find a better "entry level" pair of separates than Rogue. Made in the USA..by very nice folks.
The amp you just bought, the Atlas Magnum, is an absolute steal.
I think the Atlas Magnum should be three grand instead of two.
And I think their class-d 100wpc amp should be two grand instead of three.
It's a funny world.
Maybe they should split the difference and make them both $2500. :)

I agree with the other responders in that the content was a little thin, but all in all he did a good job.
The review had enough substance for the average consumer looking to really step up from run of the mill mid fi, but for audiophile lunatics - not so much.
He didn't mention anything about how the Rogue amp/pre interacted with the Gallo 3.1's, room dimensions, cartridge, music, input/output impedance etc.....I think the box shoving feigned exhaustion in the beginning of the video was a waste of time that could have been better used to describe his system, his background, and so forth. I'm sure he will continue to improve on all the aforementioned short comings as he continues reviewing gear.
On the plus side, he was easy to understand with his non regional dialect; ie he wasn't a "hillbilly" nor was he "street".
He had what I would consider good associated gear that many of us non trust funders can relate with. Who wants to see a Rogue review with a pair of Kef Blades or Wilson Alexandria speakers?
I think he hit the sweet spot (budget wise) with his VPI table, Gallo 3.1 speakers, Manley Shrimp, and his substantial homemade hardwood rack.
The video production quality was at least as good as anything Peter Breuninger does with his AV Show Reports which is probably the current standard for video reviews.
Also; The fact that he isn't yet collecting social security is a plus. Maybe some younger viewers may tune in and get interested in semi high end audio.
All in all I give him a B- and I will tune in to see what's next.
Good job hipster. Now go shave and put on some presentable attire for your next video - You aren't in a laundromat.
P.S.... I wonder if he sent Mark at Rogue a bill for the review as the editor of 6 moons would have done? Bwah Ha Ha Ha...............How's that working for ya Srajan?
........I was a vegetarian for 15 minutes... until the main course.
Great points! Totally agree...get the man a shave and a haircut.
Yes, good sensible associated gear.
I will disagree about one thing. Peter Breuninger video's are embarrassing as far as production qualities. A 14 year old with an iPhone can do better. Really rough. He really has to be kidding in that regard.
Spezza;I completely agree with you in that Peter Breuninger's earlier videos were amateurish, especially the ones that were shot "point of view" with a camera strapped to his dome. Peter's latter videos however, have improved a great deal from a technical standpoint - Thankfully!
Getting back to Ron; If your going to take the trouble to do a nicely produced video, then get some casual dress clothing and put it on.
If you look like a pro, you'll have a better chance at being perceived and treated as such.I can recall meeting Geoff Poor from Balanced Audio Technology a couple of years ago at CES and his appearance and demeanor was that of a charismatic fortune 500 CEO. The point being, Geoff cared enough to make a favorable impression as he yucked it up with show attendees while spinning old Cream and Rod Stewart LP's - Not much in the way of chamber music and audiophile approved drivel in the BAT room.

Agree completely on all points.
The head honcho of BAT is my kinda of guy.
Judge for yourself...
Killer job, Peter. I have added GTT Audio to my short-list of dealers/retailers that I must visit!
Sorry Peter, that video is not anywhere near pro quality. No cigar!
Cheers,
Al
Sorry, it looks like home movies. No comparison to the other fellow.
Good content, however. If you think this good production, that is sad.
Um, yeah...
Plenty of rippling & waving video artifacts, and I have a couple of other potentially hurtful comments to add.
But I'll try to be gentle. Here goes:
I found the addition of the soft background music all the while you were interviewing Bill to be quite distracting and equally unnecessary. Opening & end credit tunes are not only fine, but sounded WAAAAAAY better than the audio feed from poor Ron's otherwise superior video.
Also found Peter's accent & voice not entirely up to, ahem!, "broadcast" standards. Had no issues with Ron's voice or mannerisms, even thought his pajamas looked all right on a "Cat"!
Anyways, best of luck with that audio reviewer career, Pete...
Um, Perhaps you meant to reply to Peter?
Yes. i like Ron as well. I hope he continues to produce these clips. I did send him an email of possible suggestions- have not heard back yet.
IMO, his clips need to be a little longer and reveal some live listening.
Sprezz,
I usually dislike hipsters and wannabe's but considering the fact that I own a Cronus Magnum and am impressed by what Rogue Audio's trying to accomplish in the field of bang for the buck components I figured that I'd check out the link that you supplied.
Okay, the 99/100 review seemed to be reasonable and professionally presented but the content was thin. It did, however, tempt me to find out more about these products and I suppose that's what it was meant to do.
Because I own a Cronus Magnum I decided to go into the components review section of the site and see for myself what the reviewer thought about this integrated in comparison to my experiences with it. He was pretty spot-on with his findings and opinions. I completely agree with him about the overly sensitive remote and intend to contact Rogue for the fix. I also agree with his opinion about the pain-in-the-ass way they expect you to change the impedance setting, although I must admit that I haven't yet had to switch out of the 8-ohm mode 'cause I've not had the opportunity to try out any 4-ohm speakers in my system. Surely Rogue could see fit to work out a more ergonomic method without breaking the bank.
All in all, the reviewer did a yeoman-like job presenting his opinions and I believe that he'll become more accomplished as he gains experience, and guess what? His reviews aren't encumbered by excessive and unnecessary prose about his love life, etc. ;-)
Cheers,
Al
Good post Al. I largely agree.
Thank god someone under 65 is actually doing this.
The fact he reviews affordable, huge bang for the buck gear is a plus.
and LOADS better than most of the stuff on utube, which looks and sounds awful.
I don't think the guy is all that knowledgeable (technically) about audio, but he sure does know about small scale A/V production.
For instance he doesn't mention speaker matching or system synergy much, and falls too often into the linguistic trap of saying/thinking the component under review is the only thing in the system that's making the sound.
But he does so some comparisons.
Thanks for the link
Astute remarks. Agree. Production is impressive. Enthusiasm factor is high.
My only criticism would be the use of a few too many cliches.
