That's a good question. We should ask them. TAS did mention the burn-in recommendation and what they did, which Stereophile did not.

The DS DAC doesn't measure good - according to some users on Asylum (based part on HiFi New's tests)...yet Mr. Atkinson says it measures "superb in many ways"
At the risk of sounding simplistic - which is it ?

Superb in many ways doesn't mean in all ways. I don't put much stock in measurements. Some of the best sounding equipment I have owned did not measure very well. Cary 2A3 power amp, Cary 805 power amp. Audio Note NOS dac. Teradak Chamelion. Lowther Medallion speakers

Measurements have to be interpreted correctly to be useful. They are quick and repeatable, if not always relevant. Listening tests are usually relevant but they are very time consuming and may give unreliable results unless a suitable collection of reference recordings are used. A combination of measurement and listening can be an effective way to select components and set up a system.
In some cases, components designed to ignore measurements will only sound good until the listener learns to hear their characteristic distortions, which may only appear with certain types of music.
