In Reply to: RE: I read JA's reply to say that his comparison only used the Ayre as a transport--same DAC both cases posted by John Marks on May 11, 2014 at 19:25:40
...Ayre players only have AES/EBU outputs as far as I know. So really it's an indictment of the USB input in said DAC.

And so it is very difficult to generalize from one case--not that I think you did that in this case.
I grow tired of people making sweeping generalizations about DSD. Leaving aside the fact that as far as I know, most consumers can't get access to any files that started out DSD and have been DSD for every moment of their existence, I think that all one can really say is, "I love the sound of this ADC and that DAC, in DSD mode."
Keeping in mind that nearly all modern DACs handle DSD as multi-bit for at least part of the process.

Have you recorded to DSD JM? I know you have done some impressive work with 192 kHz PCM.
If not..why not....if so...your impressions.
It's been said a 1,000 times (and a lot more about DSD conversion technology), but some just don't listen.
Observe, before you think. Think before you open your yap. Act on the basis of experience.
Available.
Do each of those recordings come with a notarized statement that they were for every moment of their existence "Native DSD"?
(Like Elizabeth Warren is "Native American.")
SO: There was no level adjustment, splicing, or anything?
AFAIK, the only "Pure Native DSD" recordings are those that a certain European producer has shared with certain people as being totally raw and unedited.
Not for commercial purchase.

It's a nasty world out there.
People will do whatever they can to make a buck.
So, sue me!

Ask them. I am sure Tom will be happy to reveal all.
but important.
Now, when Sony opens it's library to downloading, that will definitely be significant.
How much of their library is from an original DSD source?
I thought there were more releases on their label.
SA-CD.net shows slightly over 200 which admittedly is not a huge amount.
Just because they have issued slightly over 200, it does not mean that all of them are from original DSD sources and never transcoded (and that was the issue at hand).
While JM's "issue at hand" was about transcoding, it sure would be nice play all of DSD music available via a server based transport without having to use a PS1 hack.
Yup. The PS3 hack is the only game in town. I'd love a trade-in program where the record companies would take my discs back along with a nominal fee in return for a comparable download.
