I started working as a technical consultant in Mexico in early 1991. Classic Records started not long after this. Hobson was still in New York. I remember calling him after reading an announcement of his plan. It mentioned solid state mastering. I called to push him to use tube equipment. He was polite, but firm. I think part of the early criticism of the sound of his reissues was due to his using transistor equipment in mastering. He eventually came around, mostly from the influence of Wilma Cozart Fine when he reissued the six Mercury recordings. Of course, Bernie Grundman had to be convinced too.
