Clearly a product in a class by itself, and, likely to remain so in my estimation. But a masterful review, of course. Honest and yet succeeds in putting the best face on what is surely the silliest product since the elcaset.
I suppose that several people will want a machine that costs as much as a car but has a worse feature set than a netbook at 1% of the cost, is a high-definition player that won't read DVD-A's or SACD let alone show movies, functionality available for 2% of the cost, needs an internet connection but can't download music, available in any computer for 3% of the cost and can't beat the sound quality of a player that WILL read the appropriate disks for 20% of the cost. Unfortunately it isn't even suitable for computerphobic audiophiles as they still need one to to download and burn the material which they then trot over to the box, then mess with the metadata, then regret their buying decision.
Hopefully there will be enough folks interested in having a single-brand system or taken by the ID to buy the pilot run. Probably everyone else will make the mental connection that they can do a great deal better at a fraction of the cost by just buying a DAC. Especially as JA effectively points that out in the first paragraph...

At 30 kilobucks, it sold more units in the first year than Boulder anticipated for its lifetime.
Would you be surprised if the 1021 outlasted both SACD and DVD-A?

the obvious answer is that all those other functions would degrade the sound!....

The Oppo Blue Ray player will read DVD-Rs for 500 bucks. And play DVD-A and SACD.
Dont you think $24000 for a nicely built large paperweight is worth it?
Yep, that was the very 2% solution I was thinking of...
Thankyou, Mr. Holmes.
