I respect Dick Olsher but had a negative experience with 12 ga solid wires. They are hard to work with and didn't sound particularly good in my system. Certainly not worth the effort in my case.I'll second the recommendation of Cat 5 plenum cable, but you don't have to work up one of those complex, braided configurations to get a pretty good speaker cable, and I'd hesitate to use them for a longish run.
Speaker cables are highly application dependent. I would recommend you work up something fairly straightforward, that sounds good to you, with the Cat 5 and enjoy the music.
