I decided i like the CVH recepie over the JR twists. It was not a simple decision. The CVH is just more true to reality while if your system has any brightness whatsoever it will benefit from the JR twist's slight tendency to be on the warmer side. The final score is sort of like 1.1 to 1.0 in favor of the CVH silvers. Maybe it is just synergy, but in my system the CVH is just a tad more cohesive.
You can not go wrong building either cables and if your system is a bit agressive sounding, the JR twist is your choice, If you are using tubes or a an SET forget the twist go for the silver the extra transparency is a bonus.
I also think the RGXX core DIY is just an average sounding DIY cable, not bad considering it costs only pennies but I also think others are better.
Jon, don't even bother to respond on the RGXX notion.
To each his own.
A lot depends on the individual implementation on both of these.
On my twisted pair recipe, if the shield is not spaced away from the twisted pair enough, then the sound will not be as open or dynamic as it could be. If the wires are not twisted tightly, and kept tight with a teflon plumbers tape wrap, or if inferior heat shrink is used (PVC instead of polyolefin), etc. then it will not perform as well as it can.
On Chris's recipe, if the core used for the silver wires is not teflon tubing (cotton rope does not work nearly as well), or the tubing is stuffed with nylon instead of the cotton (or not stuffed at all), then the recipe will not be likely to perform as well as it can. Looseness in the wires will not help either.
Either recipe will not sound quite as good with a Techflex covering, due to less than perfect insulation qualities.
There are a lot of potential variables in the construction of both cables, and each person's system is different, each person's individual preferences and sonic concerns are different, so it is difficult to say with any authority that one is going to turn out sonically better than the other.
This is the first I've heard of Techflex "hurting" the sonics....could you please explain what negative effect you've heard and possibly why techflex "changes" the sound. Also, what covering do you then recommend as wrapped plumbers tape over bare copper braid isn't exactly pleasing to the eye
Qualify all that with the statement that it is absolute for my system only. The sonic differences are small enough that you can say that Chris's recepie will sound better in every system, in some situations it may be too forward. Since i made both sets of cables with construction techniques as close as possible, the only thing i can conclude for sure that I succeded to make the silver wires slightly better sounding.
The construction of the silver wires using 32 AWG teflon coated wire is quite hair raising. In contrast the construction of the Twisted pairs is a walk in the park, but with a lot more danger to one's skin on one's fingers.
The point is no matter which cables you decide to build, the rewards are fantastic.
