A stereo system, reduced to its most basic function, takes electricity from the wall and converts it into sound. The cleaner the electricity, the better the sound. I'm using a Shunyata PLC and Shunyata Venom power cords and couldn't be happier.

In terms of cleaning up the electricity what does a power chord do that the heavily filtered power supply of a component doesn't do?

Probably the one consistent attribute an aftermarket Power Cord adds is the construction typically reduces or nearly eliminates radiated energy from the AC cord to associated signal cabling and possibly the components themselves. The cable geometry may also incorporate a noise reducing (common mode rejecting) lay.
