I strongly agree with both Duster and Madisonears
Any decent a/c connector is designed to be used with stranded wire. In addition to being safer you will get a larger contact area on all 3 legs when using stranded due to the "crush" when tightened. This will also make for a better/safer connection.
Do the voltage drop calculation. 12awg is plenty and opens more options as to better wire. If it were me I would call Chris VH, order enough for a flavor 2, build it and call it a day.
If you must do 10awg then why not consider a flavor 4? These are great cables but building a 38 footer would be comparable to wrestling a good sized anaconda. You would definitely need another set of hands. This would give you 9awg on both line and return and 10awg on ground.
I have a less expensive alternative if you are interested. I have about 50 feet of Carol SOOW 10/3 600 volt cable that was cryoed by Lee Weiland about 3 months before his unfortunate passing. I used to build some cables for him and this is the last of a 100 foot piece. I'd be happy to talk about it if you are interested. This makes a nice entry level power cable but make no mistake if you went with 12awg you would have more and better options. The "boutique" 10/3 cables would be out of sight when building a 38 footer.
Follow Ups:
What do you strongly disagree with? I advised against terminating a large solid core conductor with a typical AC connector vs. that of a stranded conductor power cord of which most AC connector designs are intended for.
As for the recommendation of VH Audio's bulk power cables, madisonears recommended that option, and I concur as well. So what are the issues of contention that you strongly disagree with?
Duster, if you would please re-read my post it states that I "Strongly Agree" with both You and Madisonears. I gave him an additional reason to use 12awg when terminating into an audiophile type a/c connector.
As far as Madisonears recommending VH Audio products, he did and so did I. So what? I feel that a "flavor 2" would suit his requirements and if he really wants a larger cable then he could consider a "flavor 4".
What is the problem??????
Sorry about that, wood1. I must have been cross-eyed when I read your post :-)
Cheers, Duster
Apology accepted. It's the tail end of the holidays and we are all a bit cross eyed I'm sure.
